Darmstadt – City of Science & Culture

Darmstadt has a rich history of scientific and cultural achievements. Darmstadt is a hub for science and technology in the RheinMain metropolitan area. The German internet also originated in Darmstadt.

Darmstadt has been called the Science City since 1997.

Darmstadt is one of the few cities that has an element in the periodic table named after it – Darmstadtium, discovered in 1994. Darmstadt hosts not only the technical university and one of the largest polytechnics in the country, but also 3 institutes of the Fraunhofer Society. Internationally renowned organisations such as the space agencies ESOC and EUMETSAT, as well as the Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research (Gesellschaft für Schwerionen Forschung, GSI) complement the city’s profile as a science center.

Europe-wide Darmstadt counts as an efficient IT location with numerous small, middle & large IT companies & IT research institutions, whereby the tele-communications and software development sectors remain the focal point.

The heart of Art Nouveau

Culturally, Darmstadt is characterized by the Art Nouveau district Mathildenhöhe, which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you will find magnificent buildings and works of art from the early 20th century. There are also numerous museums, theaters and Darmstadt Palace, the historic residential palace of the Landgraves and Grand Dukes of Hesse.

The city also offers a high quality of life with many green spaces, parks and a lively city center. With its combination of history, culture and modern science, Darmstadt is an important location in Germany.
