Intelligent Environments are physical spaces where information technology, artificial intelligence, and interactive technologies seamlessly integrate to create dynamic, interconnected spaces. These environments rely on robust cyber-physical systems. The goal is to enhance user experiences, enabling users to interact with and manage these spaces while understanding each other’s capabilities.

Human factors are crucial in designing and implementing applications in digital spaces because they bridge the gap between technology and human interaction. By understanding user needs, behaviors, and cognitive abilities, designers can create applications that are intuitive, efficient, enjoyable to use while meeting the needs. Furthermore, incorporating human factors can help to prevent errors, reduce frustration, and enhance user satisfaction, ultimately leading to more positive interactions with digital technology.

This special issue will highlight contributions in human-in-the-loop research, particularly in designing intuitive user interfaces and end-user programming techniques to support decision-making within intelligent environments and their applications.

About the Journal

The Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Smart Environments (JAISE) (impact factor 1.8, CiteScore 4.3) serves as a forum to discuss the latest developments on Ambient Intelligence (AmI) and Smart Environments (SmE). Given the multi-disciplinary nature of the areas involved, the journal aims to promote participation from several different communities covering topics ranging from enabling technologies such as multi-modal sensing and vision processing, to algorithmic aspects in interpretive and reasoning domains, to application-oriented efforts in human-centered services, as well as contributions from the fields of robotics, networking, HCI, mobile, collaborative and pervasive computing.

Instructions for Authors

Contributions must be at least 12 pages in length. Submitted manuscripts should not have been previously published nor be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. Conference papers may be submitted if the paper has been rewritten and expanded to at least 30% (proofs to be included in the cover letter), and, if appropriate, written permissions must have been obtained from any copyright holders of the original paper. Additional information about the journal, including detailed instructions for authors can be found on the journal website.
